Honda BF350 vs. Yamaha, Mercury & Suzuki: Real 350 HP Test Data
Four 350 HP outboards. Four independent test boats. One clear winner on top speed. Here is the actual performance data — no manufacturer spin.
If you are shopping for a 350 HP outboard for a pontoon or tritoon, you have four serious options: Honda BF350, Yamaha F350, Mercury Verado V10 350, and Suzuki DF350A. Every manufacturer publishes impressive spec sheets. But what does the data actually say when these engines are tested on real boats by independent sources?
We pulled the numbers from four separate published performance tests — each engine on a comparable 26–28 foot pontoon platform — and put them side by side.
The Four Engines, Head to Head
Here is the complete comparison from independent test data:

What the Numbers Actually Mean
Top Speed: Honda Wins by a Clear Margin
The Honda BF350 hit 52.2 mph on the Tahoe 2585 Cascade — that is 2.7 mph faster than the Yamaha F350 (49.5 mph), 3.2 mph faster than the Mercury Verado V10 (49.0 mph), and nearly 8 mph faster than the Suzuki DF350A (44.3 mph).
That is not a small gap. On a 26.5-foot tritoon, 52.2 mph is legitimately fast — and it was achieved with a 17-inch pitch 3-blade prop, not an aggressive high-pitch setup.
Acceleration: Mercury Gets Off the Line Fastest
The Mercury Verado V10 350 posted the quickest 0–20 mph time at 3.78 seconds, compared to 4.46 seconds for the Yamaha and 5.5 seconds for the Honda. If hole shot and quick planing are your priority — for watersports, tubing, or pulling skiers — the Mercury has an edge in the low-end sprint.
The Honda's 0–30 mph time of 6.4 seconds versus Mercury's 6.28 seconds is nearly identical once both engines are in their power band. The Honda makes up ground quickly after the initial launch.
Suzuki DF350A: The Outlier
The Suzuki's 44.3 mph top speed stands out as significantly lower than the other three. It is worth noting the test boat was the smallest in the group (26 feet) and the prop setup was a twin 3-blade arrangement, which may not have been optimized for top speed. Suzuki's DF350A has a strong reputation for fuel efficiency and reliability — this test may not reflect its full potential with a different prop configuration.
Why Test Conditions Matter
These are not apples-to-apples comparisons in a controlled environment. Each engine was tested on a different boat, with different hull designs, different props, and different test conditions. A few things to keep in mind:
Hull design matters enormously. The Tahoe 2585 Cascade that produced the Honda's 52.2 mph result is a performance-oriented tritoon platform. A heavier or wider hull would produce lower numbers regardless of engine.
Prop selection is critical. The Honda's 17-inch pitch prop versus Mercury's 19-inch pitch prop reflects different tuning philosophies. A higher-pitch prop generally favors top speed; a lower-pitch prop favors acceleration and fuel efficiency at cruise. The Honda achieved its top speed number with a relatively conservative prop.
Test conditions vary. Water temperature, altitude, load, and weather all affect results. These tests were conducted by different organizations at different times.
What This Means for Pontoon Buyers
If you are building or buying a performance tritoon — particularly a Godfrey Monaco or similar platform — the Honda BF350 V8 is the engine that delivers the highest documented top speed in independent testing. The 52.2 mph result on a 26.5-foot boat is a real-world number from a credible source, not a manufacturer claim.
For buyers who prioritize:
- Top speed and all-around performance → Honda BF350
- Quickest hole shot and watersports pull → Mercury Verado V10 350
- Proven reliability with strong dealer network → Yamaha F350
- Fuel efficiency and long-term durability → Suzuki DF350A (with the caveat that top speed data is limited)
The Honda BF350 at Carefree Boat Sales
We are an authorized Honda Marine Certified Dealer at both our Lake Lanier (Gainesville, GA) and Lake Norman (Mooresville, NC) locations. We stock Godfrey Monaco pontoons rigged with the Honda BF350 — the same engine that produced the 52.2 mph result in independent testing.
Current factory incentives include significant rebates on Honda outboard packages. If you are comparing engines for a new tritoon build or a repower, come talk to us. We can walk you through the real performance data and help you match the right engine to your boat and how you use it.
The numbers do not lie — and right now, the Honda BF350 is the fastest 350 HP outboard tested on a comparable pontoon platform.
